Dr. Martin Aliker is well known throughout Uganda as a prominent dentist, a businessman and as a government minister. In this fascinating memoir, Dr. Aliker describes his childhood in Acholiland, where he was born in 1928 as son of a prominent chief, his education at King’s School, Budo, at Makerere in its first years as a  University College, and at Northwestern University in the United States of America, as well as at Birmingham University in the United Kingdom.

He was not only Uganda’s first and most successful dentists in private practice, but he also developed a variety of business interests. As a result of his chairmanship of the Uganda August, he was driven into exile by Idi Amin in 1972. With his wife, Camille and their four children, he spent more than 20 years in exile in Nairobi where he built up another successful dental practice.

After the fall of Amin, we worked briefly with Presidents Lule and Binaisa and also began to carry out missions for President Museveni. In his memoir, he describes his role as a foreign affairs minister and an emissary for President Museveni to President Omar Al Bashir of Sudan and between President Muammar Gaddafi of Libya and the White House under both Presidents Bush in connection with the Lockerbie incident. He also recalls his attendance at Zimbabwe independence celebrations, and later encounters with Presidents Bill Clinton and Nelson Mandela. He concludes his memoir with reflections on the past, present and future of Uganda.
